Yvonne Marie Birrcher Kavanagh, 96, passed away quietly on July 22, 2015, at the Louisa Health and Rehabilitation Center in Louisa, Virginia, where she had been a resident for the past two years. For the first 86 years of her life, Yvonne had grown up and raised her family in New Orleans, until her Lakeview home was destroyed in the flood following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, causing her to move to Virginia.Yvonne was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Dr. Lawrence Kavanagh MD, a surgeon; also by two grandchildren, Robert Bruno Jr. and Elizabeth Bruno. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Dr. Larry Kavanagh Jr. and his wife Judith M. Kavanagh; Loretta Kavanagh Hart and her husband Dr. Darrenn Hart; Maryann Kavanagh Bruno and her husband Robert Bruno; and Dr. Brian Kavanagh and his wife Dr. Julia C. Kavanagh. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Larry Kavanagh III, Moira Kavanagh Crosby, Brigit Kavanagh Jaffe, Damian Kavanagh, Miriam Kavanagh, Paul Kavanagh, Evan Hart, Emma Hart Maddox, Adrienne Bruno Hatcher, James Bruno, Thomas Kavanagh, and Clare Kavanagh. She is further survived by 9 great-grandchildren, plus numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, most notably offspring of her sister Clare Birrcher Landry, plus many members of the Birrcher and Kavanagh families.Yvonne was born December 27, 1918. For most of her adult life she was an active member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in New Orleans, often sponsoring group rosary gatherings at her Lakeview home. For the past 10 years she has been a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Mineral, Virginia, and she is most grateful to the volunteers from St. Jude’s who brought her Communion on a regular basis during her confinement at the nursing home.A visitation from 9 until 11 AM, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 presided by her nephew Rev. Aelred Kavanagh, will be offered at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., on Wednesday, July 29. Following the Mass, she will be buried next to her husband in Metairie Cemetery. All relatives and friends are invited. Also, a Mass Intention will be offered for her at St. Jude Church in Mineral Virginia, at 7 PM on Friday, August 14.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made, either to St. Joseph Abbey, 75376 River Road, St. Benedict LA 70457; or to the St. Jude Building Fund, 1937 Davis Highway, Mineral VA 23117. Arrangements are being made by Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa, and by Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, New Orleans.
Larry and Judy, We are so sorry to hear of your Mom`s passing. When I first brought my Dad to live with us she would always talk with him as they were of the same generation.
