Vernon Freeman Pendergrass, 69, of Mineral passed away peacefully in his home after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, December 10, 2009. He was born on June 21, 1940 to Willie Franklin and Betsy Grissom Pendergrass in Franklin, North Carolina. He is survived by his son, Danny and his daughter, Tammy. He is also survived by two sisters, Hester Robertson and Mary Anne Kearney and four brothers, Thomas, Willis, James and Rufus.
He is also survived by his life partner of 33 years, Minnie Hairfield Franklin of Mineral and her children, Paula Carpenter of Mineral, Johnny Franklin of Louisa, Keith Franklin of Mechanicsville, James Franklin of Phoenix, Arizona, her 14 grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan, Mikayla, Brandon, Timothy, Ashley, Adam, Christopher, Davis, Jack, Carter, Reiley, Cabell, and one great granddaughter, Kiley, all of whom he loved dearly.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 14, 2009 at Woodward Funeral Home with interment at Spring Grove Memorial Park Cemetery in Mineral. Memorial contributions can be made to the Mineral Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 274, Mineral VA, 23117.

Vernon was the father I never had. He will be sorely missed by all of us who knew & loved him. I pray that my mom will find peace somehow with such a great loss. She loved him more than words can say. Thank you to everyone who was there for us in our time of sorrow.
