Samuel Alan Hix

November 9, 1949-May 11, 2023

HIX, Samuel Alan, 73, of Mineral, Virginia departed this life on May 11, 2023 from pancreatic cancer at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Born in Louisa, VA on November 9, 1949, Sam graduated from Louisa County High School in 1968 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in May 1969. He served three years and received the Meritorious Mast in recognition of his performance and leadership as the Battalion Education NCO. Sam was proud to be a Marine!

While living in Costa Mesa, CA he was a top selling car salesman for Mazda and received many awards. Upon moving back to Louisa County in 1994, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 2015. Sam loved animals and always made sure to have dog and cat food with him when delivering the mail to feed any strays.  During his career he adopted more than a few of them.

Sports and classic cars were a big part of Sam’s life.  He was very knowledgeable about both.  He was known for his sharp mind which included an infinite number of sports facts and trivia. His collection of baseball cards and sports memorabilia was impressive. Sam excelled at baseball and basketball in high school and was on the team that won the 1967-68 Northern Division Championship. As an adult he volunteered a lot of his time working on the upkeep of the LCHS baseball field. If you knew Sam, you know that he was a passionate and loyal UVA Cavaliers fan and made many special memories attending games and tailgating with his family and friends.

Sam was renowned for his quick wit and you could always count on him for a good story or joke.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil E. Hix and Catherine Grimm Hix Carnes; his grandparents, Charlie and Nettie Hix, Bennie and Lydia Grimm, all of Mineral, VA and his nephew Zachary Hix of Chicago, IL. He is survived by his daughter, Sheranda Smith; grandchildren, Logan and Sylvia Campbell; his brother (and caretaker), John E. Hix and sister Carolyn Hix Irving (Bill); two nieces, Cindy DuVal (Troy) and Christina DelVecchio (Jonathan), aunts, uncles and cousins. Sam had three special lifelong friends, Bobby Keller, Louie Cornelious and Steve Williams (deceased). He was loved by many and will be missed!

Sam was a member of The Church of the Incarnation and served as an acolyte in his youth.  A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at The Church of the Incarnation, Mineral, Virginia on June 3rd at 2:00 pm.  A reception will follow in the church parish hall. Interment will be private on a later date in the Grimm Family Cemetery.
