Merle Dunivan Butler, 98, left this world to be with her Lord on Sunday, September 26, 2021.
She was born and raised in Mineral, Virginia, and lived in Louisa County all of her life. She was married on June 15, 1946, to Harry Phillips Butler, Sr. (Deceased); had one beloved son, Harry Phillips (“Phil”) Butler, Jr. (Deceased); had one beloved and especially close daughter, Susan Butler Warren (“Sue”), and one son-in-law, Jack Warren (Deceased). Sue stayed with Merle every day for many years until she died. They did everything together, loved each other more than life itself, and were inseparable.
Merle always believed in hard work and taking care of others. She went to work at age 15 at Woolfolk Manufacturing, the Silk Mill in Orange, Willow Oak Restaurant in Louisa, and then Sacra’s Restaurant in Mineral for 35 years. She made the best milkshakes, fried chicken, and pies in Louisa.
Merle took care of Harold and Virginia Purcell from 1999 to 2009 and was like a member of the family. Virginia was like a sister to her, and she loved and took care of her until she died.
She was like a grandmother to Eric and Jennifer Purcell, and a great grandmother to Luke Purcell, who was very special to her. She was at every Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as birthdays and weekly visits since 1999. Janet and Charles Purcell loved her and were very close to her as well.
Wayne Turney of Mineral was like a son to her for almost 70 years, and she was also close to her nephew, Andy Ellis, of Florida.
Merle was a saint, who loved everyone and always wanted to care for them and cook for them. She always said “I get to peoples’ hearts through their stomachs.” Everyone loved Merle because she was one of the finest people on earth. God has a special place for her.
Visitation is at Woodward’s Funeral Home in Louisa on Friday, October 1, 2021 from 6pm to 8pm and the funeral service will be at Woodward’s’ Funeral Home on Saturday October 2, 2021 at 11am. Grave side service will be at Mineral Baptist Church in Mineral immediately thereafter.
