Mavis H. Allhiser, 86 of Louisa, died peacefully at home with her devoted husband by her side on Thursday, October 28, 2010. Mavis was born in Louisa on August 5, 1924 to Mary Louise Smith and Henry Ryland Hester, Sr. She and Harold would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on November 10th.
Mavis worked at the Louisa Elementary School Cafeteria for fifteen years. She was a member of the Louisa United Methodist Church for over 75 years; where she tended nursery with her sister, Lois Collins. She enjoyed spending time with family, preparing dishes for holidays, going for rides in the country, and attending gospel music concerts.
Survivors include her loving husband, Harold; her attentive youngest sister, Edith Ulery of Charlottesville; a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins, especially her nieces, Alice A. Hensley, of Louisa and Julia Ulery of Charlottesville who helped care for her. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Harold and Henry Ryland Hester, Jr.; her sisters Vernelle Amick, Lois Collins, and Alleyne Monkman.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Woodward Funeral Home in Louisa.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Sunday, October 31, 2010 in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery with the Reverend Robert Haley officiating.
The family wishes to extend its deepest appreciation to Barbara and Amanda of Sentara Health Care; Hospice Staff Laura, Dan, Pam, and especially Ida; Roberts Home Medical Staff; the reverend Robert Haley; and all the friends, neighbors, and church members for their phone calls, prayers, visits and food during Mavis’ illness.
Mavis believed in the Lord and Jesus her Savior and Redeemer. We know she is reunited with her family, free of pain, and waiting for us all to be together again.

Julia,Archer, Chrys, Maria and I were saddened upon learning about the death of your aunt. We know that you so lovingly cared for your aunt as well as others in your famiy. We will be thinking of you this week-end. Take care of yourself as you have so diligently taken care of those you love. We are enjoying having Archer teach with us at the high school.
