Mary Jo Hopkins

January 31, 1939 – December 9, 2023

Mary Josephine Hopkins, also known as Jo, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2023, at the age of 84 at her home at Riverview Farm in Louisa, Virginia surrounded by her family. She was born on January 31, 1939, in Louisa and was the daughter of Wilson and Edith Chiles.

Mary Jo is survived by her beloved husband, Roy Ellis Hopkins; and their three sons, Michael Hopkins (Kim), Steve Hopkins (Crysti), and Rodney Hopkins (Leah). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Kaylyn Hill (Sean), Blake, Anna, Garrett, Tyler, Abbie, Wyatt, and Alyssa. Mary Jo is also survived by her siblings, Dorothy Hiter, Donna Stigler, Roy Chiles, and David Chiles. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilson and Edith Chiles; her sister, Deanna Webb; and her brothers, WW Chiles, Jr, James Chiles, and John Chiles.

Mary Jo was a loving and caring wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, niece, and friend. Her greatest joy came from being a grandmother, and she cherished attending her grandchildren’s events and spending time with them, teaching them her skills of cooking, baking, and decorating.

Mary Jo was known for her selfless nature and her passion for caring for others. She always put her family and others before herself. She had a deep love for God and her family, which was evident in everything she did. Mary Jo’s famous pound cakes were a testament to her love for baking and her desire to bring joy to those around her.

Mary Jo attended Louisa County High School and VCU to continue her education. She worked at VA National Bank then worked as a Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program Nutritionist for the Thomas Jefferson Health District at the VA Department of Health District.

Mary Jo was a member of Louisa Baptist Church, where she worshipped and joyfully served her Savior and church family. She actively participated in the Flower, Decorating, and Hospitality Committees at the church. Additionally, she was a member of the Virginia Farm Bureau Women’s Committee and the P. Buckley Moss Society.

On Thursday, December 14th at the Woodward Funeral Home in Louisa, VA, family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visitation beginning at 11am, then the ceremony to celebrate Mary Jo’s life will be at 12pm. Rev. David Cole, a close family friend and Pastor, will be assisting in the celebration of life along with Rev. Paige Green and Rev. Richard Sandberg. A graveside service will be held immediately after at Hillcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a contribution in honor of Mary Jo to a charity or organization of your choice.
