In Loving

Joyce B. Boozer

May 15, 1930 – Sept. 7, 2020

Heaven gained an angel on Monday, Sept 7th 2020 when Joyce Banks Boozer, 90, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Louisiana. Joyce was born on May 15, 1930 to Robert and Ruth Banks in Saluda, South Carolina.  After high school she met her husband, Earl, and they moved to Amelia, Virginia in 1956.  Years later, they moved to Louisa. She thought of Virginia as home.  In the 5 years before Joyce’s passing, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia.  Honoring a vow made long ago, her devoted daughters provided and maintained her loving care at home. During the late stages of this cruel disease, she was brought to Louisiana to live with her eldest daughter, Debra, and her family.

Joyce took much pride in her career as assistant Commissioner of Revenue for Louisa county from 1972 through 1994 where she helped implement procedures and policies that kept the office contemporary.

Having read the Bible front to cover twice, spirituality was always at the center of her life. She was a faithful member of Berea Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, attended bible study weekly, served as the church treasurer, and was active in the Women’s Missionary Union.

Other activities Joyce pursued and enjoyed exemplified the principles she carried through and practiced in her daily life such as practicing compassion, kindness, and being of service.  After becoming a grandmother, Joyce spent many days caring and nurturing her grandchildren and great- grandchildren who she was certain to spoil. As a member of the Breakfast Buddy program in Louisa for several years, she mentored children. Always a bright spot for its residents, Joyce was a volunteer at the Louisa nursing home playing bingo and providing companionship.

She is remembered by all as a loving, compassionate, patient and tolerant woman. She kept a sense of humor, a zest for life, a taste for ice cream, a desire to shop and especially a devotion to family.

Joyce was preceded in death by her spouse of 65 years, Earl W. Boozer. Also, she was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Katherine. She is survived by her brother, Wyman Banks (Miriam) of Saluda, S.C.; her three children, Debra Simmons (Harry) of DeRidder, LA, Sarah Wheeler (David Pinter) and Sandra Boozer of Louisa; four granddaughters, Morgan Unser, Amelia Unser, Sierra Jones and Shannon Wheeler; and three great-grandchildren, Neal Lowery, Lynley Jones and Langston Jones.

A funeral service will be held at Berea Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2020; family may receive friends at Woodward Funeral Home on Thursday, October 1, between 7-9 p.m.   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Berea Baptist Church, 5271 Poindexter Rd, Louisa, Va  23093 or to the Alzheimer’s Disease Research,  22512 Gateway Center Dr, PO Box 1950, Clarksburg, MD  20871-1950.
