Grace Burcher

Grace Giannotti Burcher, 103, passed away Monday, July 21, 2008 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. Grace was the only child born to the late Alfredo Jonathan Giannotti and Ethel Gillette Goodwin Giannotti on December 7, 1904.

Grace was born and raised in Newport News and taught for 41 years in the Newport News Public Schools before retiring. In October of 1980, Grace and Donnie moved to Louisa. While in Louisa she became a member of Louisa Baptist Church where she met and made many dear longtime friends. In November of 2002, she suffered a stroke leaving her blind in her left eye and loosing her hearing in her left ear. Grace was unable to live alone and care for herself after the stroke. It was at this time she went to live for one year with Russell and Brenda Marks of Marks Manor in Louisa, where she received the greatest of care. Grace returned to Newport News in December of 2003 to receive the care from her great-nephew and other caregivers.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Donnie L. Burcher, and two step-sons, Phillip D. Burcher and George F. Burcher. She is survived by her great-nephew, four grandchildren, and some great-grandchildren, many loving cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008 at Woodward Funeral Home in Louisa. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008 in the Woodward Funeral Home Chapel, 200 Fredericksburg Ave., Louisa, VA 23093. The Rev. Lowell Wright will be conducting the service. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Louisa.
