Elaine E. Alderfer

Feb 04, 1943 – Dec 06, 2017

Elaine E. Alderfer, 74, of Louisa County, passed away December 6, 2017. She was born in Frazee, Minnesota February 4, 1943 to the late Ezra R. and Vernice Stutzman Erb. For many years she dairy farmed with her husband, Harold. Also in her life, she was a teacher, a florist, and a baker for the Louisa Farmer’s Market.

She lived a vivacious and creative life, expressing her creativity through her many hobbies. She taught herself to paint, arrange flowers, and play piano. Gardening, cooking, baking, and decorating were not merely chores or expectations but creative expressions of beauty that she shared freely with family, friends, and community members. She was an expert in homemaking, with a degree in home economics from Eastern Mennonite University, and her home was a place of warmth, welcome, and comfort. As a woman of strong faith with a joyful and positive spirit, she supported everyone around her with gifts of encouragement, prayers, hospitality, and freshly baked bread.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Alderfer, son Jason of Dayton, Virginia, daughter-in-law Kirsten, and her twin grand-daughters Sallie and Irene; four siblings, Lorraine Erb of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Kenneth Erb and wife Carol of Frazee, Minnesota, Miriam Mast and husband Daryl of Weatherford, Oklahoma, and Loretta Rubenstein and husband Norton of Louisa, Virginia, many nieces and nephews, and a loving extended family.

A viewing will be held at Woodward Funeral Home in Louisa, Va on Wednesday, Dec. 13 from 6-8 p.m. Another viewing will be at Powhatan Mennonite Church in Powhatan, Va. on Thursday, Dec. 14 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a burial at 10:30, and a celebration of life at 11 a.m.
