In Loving

Derek Ellis Cunningham

November 1, 1961 – April 2, 2024

Derek Ellis Cunningham, 62, of Gum Spring, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. He was a man that appreciated the simple life and a good story. He loved enjoying the beauty of nature and being in the mountains. He loved to be outdoors, where he enjoyed camping, tending to his garden, and most of all hunting with his son. He was a skilled electrician and liked to fix things. He was always getting new tools to use and enjoy. He had fond memories of helping his father with small engine repair. He had a great knowledge and love of Virginia history. He loved to collect things, from history memorabilia to guns to odds and ends that might be “useful” someday! He loved animals, especially his dogs and cats. But most important to him was his family, especially his wife, Wendy, who was the love of his life. He will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Winnie Cunningham; and son, Joseph Cunningham. Family left to cherish his memory include his wife of 20 years, Wendy Cunningham; sister, Winnie Carol Honeycutt (Butch); special cousin, Carter Harrison Brown (Kathy); niece, Kim Casey (Jerry); nephew, Will Honeycutt; great-nephew, Declan Casey; and cousins and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Hopewell Methodist Church, 23557 Lignum Rd, Lignum, VA 22726.
