David Burtle
Mar 23, 2037 – Dec 04, 2009
David Burtle, 72, of Mineral, Va., passed away suddenly on December 4 after a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann, of 49 years; three children, Joanne, Andrew and his wife Kristen, Helen and her husband Paul; 5 grandchildren whom he loved dearly; and his brother Richard. Dave was born on March 23, 1937, to Norman and Margaret Burtle in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England. He married Ann on July 30, 1960 and moved his family to Charlottesville, Va., in May 1978. He resided in Charlottesville and Albemarle County until 2001, when he and Ann moved to Lake Anna, their current residence. Dave was a member of the Tanyard Country Club in Louisa, Va., as well as the Lake Anna Riders Motorcycle Club. He was very proud of his Harley motorcycle and also to have made his first of many skydives at the age of 65. He was also a lifelong avid fisherman. His career as an engineer spanned 43 years, most of which was spent working for Sperry Marine Systems and its various parent companies beginning in 1963. His job as a senior field engineer took him to every continent around the world, and he was regarded by his peers as an authority in his field of guidance systems for marine vessels oil tankers, cruise ships and US Navy. To those who knew him, Dave was a quiet and gentle man and he will be missed by family and friends here and in Canada, England and Ireland.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, December 11, 2009 at Woodward Funeral Home, 200 Fredericksburg Ave., Louisa, VA 23093. Rev. Carol Thornton will be officiating. A reception will follow at the Tanyard Country Club, 404 E. Main Street, Louisa, VA 23093.

Ann & Family,It is with sadness and condolences I send this message, but also joy in the fact that I could call Dave a colleague and good friend. He was my mentor and cohort for many years.Dave, enjoy those cruises in the sky!My heartfelt thoughts to you all,Stan
It was great to know David…he brought a smile to my face everytime he was around. I send my love your way, Burtle family.Love,Angela Nichole Preston
I met Dave years ago when he was a field engineer and I transferred from the accounting department to sales. I can`t count the times I depend on Dave for help with technical questions. Dave was always there in his gentle way and a smile on his face. When I think of Dave, I think of that smile and I just love to hear him speak. Dave did not have that southern accent one constantly heard at Sperry. Not only was Dave a co-worker but he was friends with everyone he met and you just couldn`t help but like himIn all the years I worked with Dave I never heard him say a negative thing, it was always positive. The world has lost a wonderful person.Bonnie Taylor
The Burtle Family ~My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.
Darling Ann and Family:Our deepest sympathy at the loss of Dave. He was such a quiet man that we didn`t get to know him as well as you Ann, but we will miss him a great deal. We are especially sorry that we were unable to be with you to say goodbye, but our thoughts were definitely with you on Friday. Much love to all of you.
Dear Bouf, Andrew, Joanne Helen and families. We are still coming to terms with such sad news. Wish we could be with you to share your sorrow, as we have been friends for so long. All our thoughts are with you. Lots Love to you all XX
Find it hard to believe. Used to meet up with him every time I visited Charlottesville. Once had his Hillman Avenger “estate which was given to him for evaluation and spent a few hours cl eaning out the ash. He used to use the floor as his ash tray. The car was considered inappropriate as it did not accept the length of his fishing rod.Ann our heartfelt condolences to you and the family.Beverley and Brigitte.”
Connie and I are deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of David Burtle.
Did not know Dave passed…Great guy, good memories,
