Obituary
John Samuel Sims, age 76, died Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at his home “Woodfield” in Pendleton, VA. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Beverly Hart Sims. Also surviving are his two sons John Samuel Sims Jr., and William Clifton Sims and his wife Kathy B. Sims, his three wonderful granddaughters Jennie Sims Oliver (husband Larry), Whitney Sims Smith (husband Reese), Lauren Sims Tipton (husband Austin), and four great grandsons. He is also survived by his brother Thomas Edward Sims (wife Jeanneice) and sister Peggy Sims Goodwin Albright. He was preceded in death by his parents John Clifton Sims and Thelma Walton Sims; his sisters Iris Sims Gray and June Sims Massie.
A lifetime member of Gilboa Christian Church in Cuckoo, VA, he served many years as the church's chairman of the board, an Elder, and as a Trustee. From 1982 thru 1990, he represented the Mineral District on the Louisa County Planning Commission, and was named chairman for the last five of those years. For 35 years, he worked for the Commonwealth of Virginia in the data processing field, retiring in 1997 as the Division Director of Telecommunications. Following retirement from the commonwealth, he joined his wife full time with her home business, The Pine Cabinet. A job he loved because it allowed him to enjoy meeting people, and making new friends in her antique and craft business. He embodied all of the traits of a true Southern Gentleman who loved his family and Woodfield, and his faithful companions, Belle and Bentley.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Gilboa Christian Church Route 33 Cuckoo, VA at 10 AM. The funeral service will be at 11 AM with a reception to follow. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery at 3 PM.

Dear Friend and School mate Beverly, Seems a day or so since John Sam seemed a little under the weather. Your FB photo of John and his friend (dog) sleeping on the bed..The dog knew what others may not have known, that his days and hours on this earth were few. That photo is still with me. When you posted that John came home from the Hospital and was under the care of Hospice, I found it difficult to imagine, since he still looked alert and healthy. So sorry that death should claim him so soon. John Sam was obviously at peace with his world the last few weeks. His death gets too close, as he did not seem the unhealthy person he became. He served his family and community with a quiet demeanor, and I will miss him on FB. Keep the faith Beverly, and may God keep John's spirit alive with all who knew him.
